Introduction
Using the Adobe Premiere plug-in for IRdeo, you can
control your Sony video camera from within Adobe Premiere 6.0 (or higher). All
you have to do is to connect your camera to your PC: using the LANC (or
Control-L) connector of the camera, and the IRdeo LANC interface for your PC.
Why connect your camera to your PC?
The PC has become a very good instrument for editing your home videos. Certainly when you have a digital camera and an IEEE1394 (or FireWire) interface in your PC; then you can transfer your digital video material directly to your PC, and you can control your camera over the same IEEE1394 connection.
But some of us still use Video-8 or Hi-8 cameras. And then
you can't transfer the video material directly to the PC; you have to use a
device to digitally capture the analog video images. But then (in almost all
cases) you still can't control your camera from your PC...
Why control your camera from your PC?
Because it's handy! If you can control your camera from
within the software you use to capture your video, you can create a list of
scenes you want to edit on your PC, and then walk away from your PC and let the
PC do the actual capturing in batch. Besides, you can let your camera fast
forward, rewind, play, pause etc. without even touching it: just send the
command by pressing a button in your capture software!
How to connect your camera to your PC?
If you have a Sony video camera, then there's a good chance that it has a LANC (or Control-L) connector. That connector can be used to connect your camera to the serial port of your PC. But then you still need something in-between:
- to handle the differing voltage levels
- to let your PC understand and speak the language of your camera
Several of these "in-between" solutions can be bought. But
they're all pretty expensive...
Why use the IRdeo interface?
The IRdeo interface is a cheap "in-between" solution! It was invented in 1998 by the German computer magazine C't.

There's just a small disadvantage to the IRdeo interface:
it only helps in handling the differing voltage levels...
What more do you need?
A piece of software the makes sure your PC can understand and speak the language of your camera. You can download such software from this web site.
The software comes in the form of a plug-in for Adobe Premiere 6.0 (or higher). This choice was made because Adobe Premiere is the de-facto standard for video capturing and editing.
